Insurance Will Not Protect you When You Have Mechanical Problems

Comprehensive insurance has a way of giving us an unnecessary confidence. We assume that once you have comprehensive insurance, any problem with the car would be covered. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not know that insurance will not protect you when you have mechanical problems with your car.

Recently, while at work, I got a call from my wife to inform me that her car would not move into gear so she can’t move. The gear box had gone bad and she was stranded close to the house. Luckily, I live close to my office so, I got into my car and when to meet her. I called a mechanic to tow the car, took her home and returned back to the office.

When I got back home that day, as I was eating dinner, she asked me how much it would cost to fix the car, when I told her, she exclaimed “wow, thank God we have insurance”. I had to inform her that insurance will not protect you when you have mechanical problems. Mechanical breakdown insurance, otherwise know as extended warranty covers that. It is different from our conventional car insurance.

Last week I got a call from a friend of mine. I had introduced him to comprehensive car insurance. So, naturally, he had called me to complain that the insurance company had denied his claim. It turned out that he had reported a mechanical problem. It dawned on me at that point that there may be other people out there who may not know this information. So I thought I used this medium to educate us all. Please do not waste your time reporting mechanical problems to your car insurance company as they will deny your claim.

This is so far the most informative insurance blog i have encountered in Nigeria. Although, an insurance bsc holder! But i still had questions that i wanted practical answers to and while digging into the net, i came across your blog sir. And i must confess, my understanding about insurance in Nigeria is getting clearer than i ever thought. Infact i just want to go over the articles over and over. Thank you for making insurance suitable to purchase without the fear of making a total loss.

    I have a question sir.
I know there are other compulsory insurance policies in Nigeria, apart from the 3rd party motor insurance like the builders liability insurance, occupiers liability insurance, healthcare professional indemnity and statutory group life insurance. But are they truly compulsory in Nigeria? That’s because people tend to get away with a lot of accidents caused mistakingly or deliberately to a 3rd party. And the 3rd party being left alone to sort himself. If these policies are compulsory and effected, then i think the rate at which accidents happen under these policies should be less because every one insured here owe’s another a duty of care.

    Thank you sir.

Thank you for taking out the time to write. It is really nice to hear from people that appreciate the effort that we put into this informational site. To answer your question, yes, 3rd party liability insurance is compulsory. Should you get in an accident, you should demand the liability policy of the person that hit you if they are at fault. If you have comprehensive insurance, you should send the information to your insurance agent and they will help recover the cost of repairs. This is important as it helps keep your future insurance premium down. It’s harder if you don’t have comprehensive insurance as you would have to be the one chasing the insurance company to recover your cost. We wrote about this before so take time and read our article at https://insuranceinfong.com/how-to-get-value-for-your-third-party-insurance/
