Get Referrals

It is very important to get referrals from friend or colleagues when shopping for insurance. There is a saying that “experience is the best teacher.” I like to say, that it is best to learn from other people’s experience. I have told the story about how I was hesitant to get insurance due to the perception about car insurance in Nigeria. However, after recommendation by a friend of mine, I was able to try his insurance company and it was the best decision I made. His experience was very vital to me choosing an insurance company that works for me today.

Shop Around

You have to shop around if you want to save money. If you are driving in traffic and you want to buy fire extinguisher for instance, but you don’t know the cost, the best thing to do is to try several sellers to get a good idea of the fair price. This is applicable to car insurance. You may be with an insurance company for years and they take you for granted and not offer you the same discount they are offering new customers. So, you need to shop around every year to see what is out there. But please be mindful of joining a company just because they are cheap. It would be a waste of money if you are unable to make claims when you do have an accident.

Customer Service

Customer service is very important. Any business that does not understand good service in 2020 should not be in business. In the event of an accident, you should be able to easily reach your insurance company to make a claim. They should also be able to resolve your issues as soon as possible. Accidents are not convenient, so when you call to make a claim, the person on the other side must be considerate, kind and empathetic.

How Quick Claims Are Settled

This, in our parlance, is the koko of the matter. When you have an insurance claim, you should be able to get your car fixed right away. My current insurance company has made it so easy. All I do is take pics with my phone, send it to my agent via Whatsapp. He sends me a form, which I fill and send back to him and within days, my car is in the shop. If you don’t have a similar or better experience, then I would advise you to look for a different insurance company.
